BACTERIOLOGICAL INSTITUTE,
HEPORT FOR THE YEAR 1925.
By E. P. MINETT, M.D., D.P.H., D.T.M. & H., L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S., GOVERNMENT BACTERIOLOGIST.
1.-PREPARATION OF CALF LYMPH.
The preparation of Calf vaccine was maintained regularly up to June, since then considerable difficulty has been experienced in obtaining buffalo calves.
The number of calves used for vaccination was 25.
The number of tubes of lymph issued was 14,404, a falling off from last year's issue owing to the comparative absence of Small Pox cases in the Colony.
The quantity of lymph in stock on 31st. December, 1925, 3928 cc. calculated to be sufficient for the vaccination of 177,840 persons,
The value of lymph issued free as per Government Noti- fication No. 380 of 1910 was $4.753.50.
There were no very heavy demands for lymph owing to the absence of any vaccination campaign.
Calves from the Dairy Farm were experimented with for the production of lymph but were found to be unsatisfactory, the yield per calf being 7 grams only corresponding to 35 cc. of glycerinated calf lymph.
2.--ANTI-MENINGOCOCCUS SERUM.
During the year 2530 cc. were issued, the present amount of serum in stock and ready for issue is 107.470 cc. about 107.5 litres.
Frequent control tests for sterility were carried out and the agglutinating power was estimated regularly.
3. CONTAGIOUS ABORTION VACCINE.
A smaller amount of this vaccine was prepared this year than in former years, and no new strains of B. Aborticus isolated, as the Dairy Farm herd is now being segregated and fewer animals affected.
A large number of agglutination tests were carried out at the request of the Veterinary Surgeon.
